The 340B Program Explained: A Plain-English Guide for FQHCs

What the 340B Drug Pricing Program is, who qualifies, and how Federally Qualified Health Centers use it to stretch resources and serve more patients.

The 340B Drug Pricing Program is one of the most powerful — and most misunderstood — tools available to Federally Qualified Health Centers. At its core, 340B allows eligible safety-net providers to purchase outpatient medications at significantly reduced prices, then reinvest the savings into expanded patient care.

Who qualifies as a covered entity?

Six categories of safety-net providers are eligible, including FQHCs, FQHC Look-Alikes, Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program grantees, and certain hospitals. Eligibility is verified by HRSA and recertified annually.

How the savings actually work

Drug manufacturers participating in Medicaid must offer 340B-priced drugs to covered entities. The discount typically ranges from 25% to 50% off Wholesale Acquisition Cost, with deeper discounts on many branded medications.

Where most health centers leave money on the table

  • Incomplete eligibility capture at the prescription level
  • Contract pharmacy networks that don't match patient prescribing patterns
  • Manual split-billing workflows that miss claims
  • Lack of quarterly reconciliation against TPA data

A free program analysis is usually the fastest way to quantify how much of your potential 340B value is actually being captured today.
