How to Maximize 340B Savings Through Your Contract Pharmacy Network
Five strategies Community Health Centers use to grow 340B revenue: prescriber alignment, network mix, capture rate, manufacturer policies, and reconciliation.
Contract pharmacy arrangements remain one of the highest-leverage components of a healthy 340B program — and one of the most affected by recent manufacturer restrictions. Centers that adapt their strategy quickly continue to grow program value.
1. Align your network to actual prescribing patterns
Pull 12 months of prescription data and overlay it on your current contract pharmacy footprint. Most centers find X–Y% of eligible scripts are filling at non-contracted locations.
2. Measure capture rate, not just savings
Capture rate — the share of eligible prescriptions actually captured for 340B — is the leading indicator. Savings follow capture rate with a lag.
3. Stay on top of manufacturer policies
Manufacturer restrictions evolve quarterly. A standing review process — and a designated owner — prevents revenue leakage when policies change.
4. Reconcile TPA data monthly
Monthly reconciliation catches mismatches before they compound. Quarterly is too slow; annual is far too late.
5. Train your prescribers
Many capture-rate gaps come from prescribers steering patients to convenient but non-contracted pharmacies. A short, recurring education touchpoint is the cheapest revenue improvement available.
